Event Alert – Poetry takes over Banyule for Voices in the Streets!

Coinciding with the beginning of the Sonic Poetry Festival, and as a collaboration between Mother Tongue Poetry and The City of Banyule, Voices in the Streets is bringing poetry to public places where poetry rarely has appeared before!

Discover the ‘20 poems selected from a diverse selection of local writers’ which, according to Mother Tongue Poetry, are ‘set to challenge perceptions, spark conversations, and inspire change through the raw and authentic power of poetry’. These poems are affixed to fences, hanging out in local parks, and generally making a nuisance of themselves in public spheres to the delight of onlookers. Make sure you check them out before the ending of this month – that’s 31st August 2024! You’ve got roughly two weeks left to experience this incredible cultural ephemeral transformation of Banyule. Go to https://www.mothertonguepoetry.com/voices-in-the-streets-2024/ to find the interactive map that guides you to pure poetry treasure!

What’s more, there are 6 participating cafés whose coffee cups will be inserting 5 different poetic pattern interrupters into your morning coffee runs, as they celebrate the diverse voices of writer/workshop facilitators who will also be running 5 related workshops for the project during August and September. Come along to these affordable, community building workshops at the Ivanhoe Library. Designed to make poetry accessible to everyone, these workshops give you a chance to learn from experienced writer/performers such as Aunty Sharon Hughes and Kristen Munro, Fleassy Malay, Sam Petersen, Hawraa Kash, and Waffle Irongirl. Get in quick as the Voices in the Streets workshops are selling out fast!

About Mother Tongue Poetry:

Mother Tongue is an organisation passionate about supporting the voices of women, and gender diverse people who identify as women.

The organisation centres around our live events and has become Melbourne’s biggest Women’s Spoken Word event and one of the most established Spoken Word events in the city. It is hosted and run by Fleassy Malay and Katie Lohner. A place for Passionate, Powerful, Vulnerable and Honest performance; it stands aside from, most Spoken Word events in its depth and authenticity.

The organisation has been running since the end of 2012 and has evolved from a monthly event to the NFP organisation it is today. Mother Tongue supports these marginalised voices through its own live events, online events, and youtube channel as well as aligning with other events and organisations to get more women and gender diverse voices onto their platforms. In the past, we have worked with the Melbourne Writers Festival, Seven Sisters Festival, Rainbow Serpent Festival, Melbourne Spoken Word, Australian Poetry Slam, Banyule City Council and more.
