Codes of conduct:

I charge for reviews and articles because I need to make my blog/website financially self-sustaining so I can keep supporting new writers and musicians with the articles I and those writing for me create. I always pay my writers because writing is a service for the community just like plumbing,  playing music, or selling carrots.

I aim to support artists (poets and musicians) who may not be otherwise getting a lot of press. My reviews can be quoted verbatim and used in your promotional material.

Paying for a review does not entitle you to a positive review. However, writers will endeavour to understand your art on its own merits, aiming to ascertain its target audience, what it’s trying to do, how it’s innovative, how it’s building on prior art, what it’s doing well, etc.

There may be some gentle criticism/negative sides in the reviews, in an effort to keep them balanced / honest. If you’re not okay with that, don’t pay for a review, please.

If you would like to write for me, or if you would like a single or book reviewed or an interview on your writing practice/band/solo project etc you can email me: contact@gemmawhite.com.au

A note on Westerly:

I also personally write poetry book reviews for Westerly, who do not charge any fee for reviews as they have funding. You can ask me if I would like to review your poetry book for Westerly, but places are limited. The GW Review is not in any way connected to Westerly, it is an independent initiative of my own making.

A note on commissioned works:

I will, at times, approach poets for the right to publish a selection of their poems on this website in return for payment to them at my discretion. I will, at times, commission articles and reviews by specific writers on specific topics to do with poetry or music in return for payment to them at my discretion. These instances are a separate kind of commissioning agreement to a publicity agreement, which covers publicity for a person or thing (music single, book).

A note on using The GW Review for self-generated publicity:

I pay writers to write about other people and other things (music single, book) other than themselves, so they are paid for their service to the writing and music communities. If you have an event that you would like to publicise by writing an article yourself to be published here, there is no fee for that, but you also don’t get paid, as it’s your own event, so in that case the commissioning agreement and the publicity agreement cancel each other out. If, however, you want someone else to write about your event, there will be a fee so the writer of the article gets paid.
