I picked up this book at my local library, in my research into books on creative practice which is my current obsession. It’s written by a visual artist, whose colourful works pepper the pages inside, but the lessons can be applied to any artform.
Creative Thursday is so-called because the author made a weekly date with a friend to talk about their creative projects, long before she became a professional visual artist. There was something about making space for her art ambitions that became more and more powerful as her creative practice grew.
This book puts forward the belief that “everyone is creative”, and takes you on a journey to find and nurture your own creativity. It tackles subjects like moving through resistance, finding inspiration, acting with commitment, setting time limits, perfectionism, finding your voice, looking for encouragement, tracking progress and stepping outside your comfort zone.
While perhaps intended as a quite introductory volume for new artists, the welcoming and accepting tone of this book is a great refresher for older artists who might want to look at their art practice in a new light. Anne’s teachings draw on her own experiences in developing her creative practice, from the discouragements of critical teachers to trusting her own sources of inspiration. I found this book to be a gentle, easy read over a couple of days.
I rate it 4.5/5 STARS
